Are Dutch candidates quietly stepping back from their own boardrooms?
That was one of the more thought-provoking questions raised at this week’s IN-BOARD module, hosted by the @INSEAD Directors Network Netherlands at @Egon Zehnder in Amsterdam.
The session focused on supervisory board composition, effectiveness, and the evolving role of non-executive directors in an increasingly complex environment.
With regulation, geopolitical uncertainty, AI and societal pressure all intensifying, boards are being asked to do far more than governance oversight alone. Done well, supervisory boards become a real competitive advantage, supporting management, challenging assumptions and helping organisations navigate complexity.
A few insights that stood out:
→ Supervisory boards are being pulled into a more active supporting role to executive teams, particularly during periods of rapid change.
→ Boards of listed Dutch companies are now highly international. This sparked a candid discussion about leadership culture, national identity and whether Dutch candidates are becoming less likely to compete for these seats.
→ Effective boards aren’t built on harmony alone. Constructive challenge, trust and diversity of thought are essential for good decision-making.
→ Aspiring non-executives need a clear personal narrative around the value they bring. Organisations increasingly look for specific expertise and perspective, not just broad leadership experience.
→ Board roles demand serious commitment, professionally and personally. Both sides need to carefully assess whether there’s a genuine fit.
The session also explored board evaluations, succession planning, onboarding, competency matrices and the realities of building a first NED portfolio. Thank you to @Bart Blommers and @Kirsten Tijssen for such an insightful and thought-provoking session.
The IN-BOARD Programme is a non-executive board programme for @INSEAD alumni, by alumni, focused on strengthening governance and board leadership. For more information goto IN-BOARD Program
