We started the day with an interesting and unusual way of introduction of each attendee followed by group work that led to a deeper understanding of how strategy development is very different depending on the context the organization finds itself in. Four distinct domains were defined: Clear, Complicated, Complex and Chaotic (the four Cs) and how best to approach strategy development in each of these domains.

The Clear domain reflects one where rules are in place and the relationship between cause and effect is clear: Following a predefined manual will best suit strategy development and assessment

The Complicated domain describes a domain that requires analysis and expertise where there are a range of possible strategy outcomes: Involvement of experts and consultants with domain knowledge helps getting to the right strategy and assessing its quality

The Complex domain is one where there no right answers and previous patters don’t help in strategy development. This domain requires a much broader understanding and discussion and a more trial and error approach and increase of agility is needed for success

The Chaotic domain where no cause and effect is clear establishing order and stability is paramount. Paralysis is the enemy and action (any action) is needed to staunch the bleeding.

We want to thank Keyvan Kian and Godart van Gendt for the development of this session and facilitating it and McKinsey for hosting us all.
